A black tungsten carbide band with two strips of locust wood running either side of an abalone shell center. The shell shifts between green, blue and violet as your hand moves, so the ring reads plain black from a distance and detailed up close. The domed profile sits flat against the finger and the polished inside slides on easily.

The piece

The core is tungsten carbide, one of the hardest materials used in men's rings, with an electroplated black finish. Tungsten carbide holds a polish and resists scratching far better than softer metals, which is why it suits a ring worn every day. The band has a U-shaped, domed outer profile.

Across the top sit two strips of locust wood with a natural open grain, set on either side of a center line of abalone shell. Because the shell and wood are natural materials, the pattern varies slightly from ring to ring. The inside of the band is smooth and polished.

How to wear it

Wear it alone on the ring finger or index finger, where the wood and shell get room to show. The black finish sits well with a black watch strap, a steel bracelet or a plain leather band on the other wrist. It works with a T-shirt and jeans, and it is quiet enough to wear with a jacket at dinner or a wedding.

Choosing your size

Sizes run from US 7 to 14, including half sizes from 7.5 to 13.5. This is a wide, domed band, so if you are between sizes or usually wear a thin ring, choose the next size up. Tungsten carbide cannot be resized, so measure an existing ring that fits the same finger before ordering, and measure at the end of the day when fingers are slightly larger.

Will it survive everyday wear?

Tungsten carbide is very hard and resists scratching well. The wood and shell inlays are set into the band, but like any natural inlay they should be kept away from heavy impact and abrasive work.

How do I care for it?

Wipe it with a soft dry cloth. Avoid soaking it, and take it off for swimming, showering and anything with harsh chemicals, since the wood and shell are natural materials.

Can it be resized later?

No. Tungsten carbide rings cannot be resized, so confirm the size against a ring that already fits that finger before ordering.
