Take a string or a shoelace and mark on it the length you are considering, for example 56 cm.
Hold the two marks together at the back of your neck, wearing the kind of top you usually wear.
Look in a mirror: the lowest point of the string is where the chain will sit.
Too high or too low? Try 5 cm more or less: that is one size up or down.

Already own a chain you like? Lay it flat, clasp closed, and measure it end to end. A broad neck or chest makes every length sit a little higher.

Tightly fitted segments form one smooth, round line that lies flat and follows the neck without catching. Choose 1.2mm for a barely-there line or 1.5mm for a little more presence, in polished silver steel, gold-tone or rose gold-tone, from 18 to 24 inches.

The metal

316L stainless steel

The steel used for watch cases. 316L is a low-carbon grade chosen for its resistance to rust and corrosion.
Made for daily wear. It does not blacken the way silver or brass can.
Gold and black tones are a plated finish. A rinse after the pool or the sea and a quick wipe with a soft cloth keep the color even.

The chain is stainless steel, built in the round snake style: small segments fitted so closely that they form a smooth, flexible tube. There are no visible gaps, so the light runs along it evenly instead of sparkling in spots. Stainless steel does not rust and does not turn your skin green, which is why it works as a chain you leave on.

The silver version is polished stainless steel. The gold-tone and rose gold-tone versions are electroplated finishes, and we say so plainly. Polished end caps lead into a lobster clasp and ring in the same tone, so the closure matches the chain. At 1.2mm or 1.5mm, it is slim enough to carry a small pendant or to be worn bare.

How to wear it

Over a white tee it draws a clean line at the neck; under an open collar it shows only at the opening, which suits the office and a suit. Layer it over a wider Cuban or rope chain for a two-level look, or keep it alone with a watch in the same tone. Rose gold-tone sits well with warm skin and brown leather; silver goes with steel watches.

Lengths are 18" (45cm), close at the base of the neck; 20" (50cm), just below the collarbone and right for most men; 22" (55cm), at the top of the chest; and 24" (60cm), lower, good with a pendant or over a tee. For width, 1.2mm is the discreet option and 1.5mm shows a little more next to other chains. If he has a broad neck, go one length up.
