Measure at home in 2 minutes
You need a strip of paper (or a string or shoelace), a pen and a ruler.
- Take a string or a shoelace and mark on it the length you are considering, for example 22".
- Hold the two marks together at the back of your neck, wearing the kind of top you usually wear.
- Look in a mirror: the lowest point of the string is where the chain will sit.
- Too high or too low? Try 2" more or less: that is one size up or down.
Already own a chain you like? Lay it flat, clasp closed, and measure it end to end. A broad neck or chest makes every length sit a little higher.
No ruler? A bank card is 3.4" long: count how many fit along your strip.

Open gears and rivet heads in a polished steel frame.
Atlas held the world steady. Steadiness is a mechanical thing, and this tag shows the parts. Stacked gears sit open inside a polished titanium steel frame, held by small rivet heads at the corners, on a box chain. At 1.4 in (35mm) tall it lands on the upper chest, shows in an open collar and disappears under a buttoned shirt. Choose silver-tone or gold-tone gears.
- Steel that stays on through the shower
- Tag of 35 x 21mm, 4.5mm thick
- Silver-tone or gold-tone gears
Details & specs
The tag and the box chain are titanium steel, polished to a smooth, bright surface that does not rust. The tag measures 1.4 in high by 0.8 in wide (35 x 21mm) and 4.5mm thick, and one pendant weighs 11 g, so it has presence without pulling at the neck.
The face is cut away so the gear wheels sit exposed against the open back, with rounded rivet heads at the corners and a curved plate across the top. On the gold option, the gears carry a gold-tone plated finish against the steel frame for a two-tone look; the silver option stays in one polished tone.
How to wear it
Wear it outside a plain white or black tee for the clearest view of the gears, or under an open collar with one or two buttons undone. Silver-tone pairs with a steel watch and a steel ring; gold-tone suits warm-toned watches and brown leather. For dinner or a date, tuck it under the shirt and let only the chain show.
Choosing your size
The tag comes on a 20 in chain, which sits on the upper chest a few inches below the collarbone on most builds. That works over a tee and under an open collar without riding too high. The only choice is the finish: silver-tone for an all-steel look, gold for gold-tone gears inside the steel frame.

Questions
Can the exposed gear dog tag stay on through gym sessions and showers?
Yes. The tag and the box chain are titanium steel, which does not rust. Rinse and dry the cut-away face now and then so sweat does not sit between the gear wheels.
What does the gold option look like?
The gears carry a gold-tone plated finish while the frame stays polished steel, so you get a two-tone look. The silver option is steel all over.
Does the 11 g gear tag pull on the 20 in box chain?
No. The tag weighs 11 g and measures 35 x 21mm, so it has presence on the chest without pulling at the neck.
Is it the size of a military dog tag?
No, it is smaller. It measures 35 x 21mm (1.4 x 0.8 in), while a standard military tag is about 2 x 1.1 in.
Are the gears visible from the front?
Yes. The face is cut away so the gear wheels sit exposed against the open back, framed by rivet heads at the corners and a curved plate across the top.
Who is this necklace for?
A man who likes mechanics, watches or engines. The exposed gears and rivets read industrial rather than military.
Will it show under a shirt?
A little under a fitted shirt, since the tag is 4.5mm thick. Under a looser shirt it disappears and only the chain shows.
Does the chain come with it?
Yes. The tag comes on a 20 in titanium steel box chain, ready to wear.
