Measure at home in 2 minutes
You need a strip of paper (or a string or shoelace), a pen and a ruler.
- Take a string or a shoelace and mark on it the length you are considering, for example 56 cm.
- Hold the two marks together at the back of your neck, wearing the kind of top you usually wear.
- Look in a mirror: the lowest point of the string is where the chain will sit.
- Too high or too low? Try 5 cm more or less: that is one size up or down.
Already own a chain you like? Lay it flat, clasp closed, and measure it end to end. A broad neck or chest makes every length sit a little higher.
No ruler? A bank card is 8.6 cm long: count how many fit along your strip.

Chain width
Three short links, one long: a rhythm you notice up close.
Atlas kept the heavens in their place, day after day. Repetition is how anything gets carried, and the Figaro chain is built on it: three short links, then one long, again and again. The pattern gives a subtle texture that catches the light, and the chain sits flat on the skin. In 304 stainless steel, silver-tone or gold-tone, from a fine 3mm to a bold 10mm.
- 304 steel: shower, gym, beach
- Seven widths, 3 to 10mm
- Four lengths, 18 to 28 in
Details & specs
The chain is 304 stainless steel, a grade known for its resistance to rust and corrosion. It has a substantial feel in the hand without being heavy on the neck. Because the steel does not rust, the chain can stay on through the shower, a training session and a day at the beach.
The classic Figaro pattern alternates three short links with one elongated one. Choose a polished silver-tone or a warm gold-tone; the gold-tone is a plated finish. Both close with a reliable lobster clasp. Widths run 3.0mm, 4.0mm, 4.5mm, 5mm, 6mm, 7.5mm and 10mm, so you can go minimal or make it the main piece.
How to wear it
A thin Figaro works with a simple tee or under an open collar, quiet enough for the office. A wider one makes a statement on its own over a crewneck, best with nothing else at the neck. Wear it from work to the weekend, and match the tone to your watch: silver-tone with steel, gold-tone with warm metals.
Choosing your size
An 18" or 20" chain sits around the collarbone, ideal with open shirts. The longer 24" and 28" fall mid-chest and below, good over a tee. For width, 3 to 5mm is understated, while 6mm and up gives a bolder look; 10mm is the heaviest of the range. If he is broad through the neck and chest, go one length up.

Questions
Is a 304 stainless steel Figaro fine to wear in sea water?
Yes. 304 stainless steel does not rust, so the sea and sweat are no problem. Rinse the gold-tone version in fresh water afterward and wipe it dry to keep the color even.
What is a Figaro chain?
A chain where three short links alternate with one longer link. It reads more textured than a plain curb chain and is a men's classic.
How do I clean between the long and short links of the Figaro?
Wash it in warm water with a drop of mild soap, run a soft brush along the links, then rinse and dry it with a soft cloth. Skip abrasive polishes, especially on the gold-tone.
Is a 10mm Figaro too much?
It is the heaviest width, a statement worn alone over a crewneck. 3 to 5mm stays understated.
Why 304 stainless steel?
304 is the most widely used stainless steel grade, chosen for its resistance to rust and corrosion, so the chain can stay on through water and sweat.
On the silver Figaro, is the shine plating or polished steel?
Polished steel. The silver-tone Figaro is the 304 stainless steel itself, while the gold-tone is a plated finish over it.
Does the 10mm Figaro feel much heavier than the 3mm?
Yes. The 10mm is a bold chain with clear weight on the neck, while the 3mm is fine and light enough to forget. The 5 to 6mm widths sit in between for everyday wear.
Which width for the office?
3mm to 4.5mm. A thin Figaro under an open collar stays quiet enough for work.
